Hundreds of folks packed a Wakulla County meeting tonight, September 6th, asking city officials to put a curb on trash taxes.
County commissioners voted to implement a 10 percent public service tax that people say they just can’t afford.
"I mean, heck just with the unemployment rate and everything that’s going on, we can not take anymore and this is kind of a stand to say no," says Wakulla County Resident Gordon McCleary.
"We’re gonna move forward with the solid waste assessment which will be a 196 dollars a year, it’ll be added to the property tax bill," says Wakulla Commissioner Alan Brock.
After Tuesday night’s meeting, the county says it plans to give the extra taxes the go ahead. People will start see changes in their bill starting January 1st.

Wakulla county citizens are being bullied by their county commissioners. If you try and say anything Mike Stewart will shut you up. We need county commissioners who have an understanding of our needs and will strive to meet them. Putting a lien on our homes for non payment of trash pickup we do not want is unconscionable. Taxing our utilities (necessities) is irresponsible. For what???? Lots of us have lost our jobs. We have kids or we are on fixed incomes. Now is not the time to place extra burden on the people of Wakulla county. I will for sure be casting my vote for whoever is running opposite these characters.

a lot more folks showed up at this meeting against these taxes and fees than just "republican tea party" people. Let them chip away at our freedoms at the county level and we are lost. 2012 is around the corner folks, don’t ever forget what the commissioners did to limit our freedom and smash local businesses with this trash deal ..a ten year trash deal I might add! Let the guv-ment take control, they surely have a track record of doing a better job. (not) Do you seriously think the 4.00 charge will stand pat over the coming years? What else will they tell us we MUST do? Wake Up Wakulla!
